Newbie Guide

<<back

If you are a newbie you have come to the right place. Here are several easy steps to avoid being shunned by the veterans here. Consider this the HomeWorld Version of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" for newbies.

One: Embrace your "newbie-ness!
------------------------------------------
You can not prevent being a newbie. Newbie status is like nationality, it can only be changed after a long and difficult process. There is nothing wrong with being a newbie per se. It is all in how you present yourself. There are good newbies and there are bad newbies.

Two: RTFM!
(That stands for Read The F***ing Manual. )
-------------------------------------
Most of your initial questions are answered in the manual. Reading and understanding the manual will prevent you from irritating others with questions they must answer daily! If you find yourself wondering "How do I chat? How do I guard a ship? How do I set formations? How do I form an alliance?" these are in the manual.

Three: Finish the training missions
---------------------------------------
Seriously the training missions will answer many of the rest of your initial questions. If you find yourself wondering "How do I move? How do I use the sensor manager?" these are in the training missions.

Four: Finish the single player game
-----------------------------------------
The single player game is a wonderous experience. Besides the fact the SP is fun it is very nicely laid out as an extended training mission. The various SP levels will highlight aspects of game play that simply reading about could not do. For example certain missions will require you to emphasize fighters others show you the importance of salvaging while still others will show you the rudiments of certain capital ship tactics.

Five: Play skirmishes against the computer
-------------------------------------
Here you may do what you like with one simple goal. You may play as many computer opponents as you like on which ever difficulty settings you like on whatever map you like. Once you can win with the following settings you may proceed to the next step:

quote:

2 comp. opponents
hardest
always attack humans
no injections
researching on
fuel burn on
hyperspacing on
ship caps on

Make no mistake, completing Step Five will not make you a great player. Many of Whoop Ass Inc.'s  products will be used on you, especially their canned products. Step Five will simply keep you from looking foolish.

Six: Feel free to proceed to WON
-------------------------------------
Under this step there are several things to remember. It never hurts to say something like "hi all" when you first enter the Lobby. HOWEVER, do not be upset if nobody says hi back. The ones that do are probably the ones who will be more patient with you. If you join a game tell the people in the game that you are new to playing on line and ask if it's "all right" for you to stay. Remember to record your games (you do this by pressing [esc] when you can see you ships, then follow the buttons)! Feel free to make or join a game called "Newbies only" or something similar, just be warned that these are occasionally perfect traps for nasty veterans to spring on newbies. Don't be disheartened! Being beaten by good players is the best way to learn. If you have recorded the game it will provide you with a nice little tutorial on what you did wrong and what he/she did right. You MAY ask for help or instruction on tactics you MIGHT NOT get an answer, do not get upset just ask again later. Some players/clans are especially good at giving you tips and hints . When you find them play them often! If you die before the game is over stick around and watch the other players play. After you have been playing for a few days say "hi" to people you recognize when they enter the lobby, again don't be upset if they don't say hi back but they usually will. Do not ask for cheats! It is impossible to cheat online so do not ask, and it will only upset the more veteran players. When you are in a game you might see "Universal sync error at frame xxxx" followed by "Cheat detected at frame xxxx" this falls under the category of "S*** happens". Nobody is cheating, the Universal sync error ruins the integrity of the game and it is time to quit.

*addition to step 6*: GG
-------------------------------
When you finish a game and get back to the lobby thank the people you played with! If there was something unusual that happened and you want to learn more ASK. If you saw a really interesting strat used on you this is also the time to ASK.

In conclusion,
---------------------
I realize it may be too late for some of you to start but you can pick up these steps at anytime. If you have already done steps 2 and 6 go back and finish the steps in between. Please for the love of HW complete these steps. To you veterans reading feel free to correct any mistakes I might have made .

Most of all HAVE FUN! This is is GAME played by many fun and interesting people. Besides playing the game meeting the people is also fun!
